Welcome to Gharkul

Welcome to our Old Age Home “Gharkul” of Belgaum.

A home away from home, Gharkul (A Home and Hope for Aged) was inaugurated on Akshatritiya day in the year 2001 at the hands late Shri Digambar Pant (alias “Anna”) Parulekar in a small rented house in Tilakwadi, Belgaum. He donated Rs.1 Lac for this noble work. We stayed in that place about 3 ½ years. Later we shifted to a better and larger accommodation in cantonment area of Belgaum that too is a rented place from 1st January 2005 in the compound of Late Shri Rustumji Ruttonji.

The number of inmates went on increasing due to our endeavor to give better and homely atmosphere to the old age people from various walks of life who had to leave their homes under various circumstances. The shelter is needed for old aged unmarried citizens, the widows, the spinsters, parents of children who are away abroad for better life and better career and of course those old age people who are abandoned by their children.

Though the concept of Vrudhashram (Old Age Homes) doesn’t fit in our Indian Culture, it is the need of the hour due to various reasons. Basically three types of people need shelter in old age homes.

  • Very poor people or people with out homes who cannot afford to pay any charges.
  • For middle class people who have spent thier life in a better and comfortable style and wants same in old age. They or their children are prepared to contribute from their earnings or from their pension etc. but want a comfortable stay and moderate modern amenities at moderate charges.
  • Very high society people who want hi-fi way of living with AC rooms & clubs etc.

Shri Mukund Potdar with his meager investment of about Rs. Three and Half Lacs started Gharkul in 2001 with only two inmates. Realizing this being a big task and endless job and cannot be run and managed single handedly a trust in the name of “Swami Chaya Pratisthana” was formed in association with like minded people in the year 2001 for second category people with only two inmates to start with. Presently the trust managed by seven able and selfless trustees. The trust is registered under No. DR/SOR/345/2001-2002.
