Though the concept of Vrudhashram (Old Age Homes) doesn’t fit in our Indian Culture, it is the need of the hour due to various reasons. Basically three types of people need shelter in old age homes.
Very poor people or people with out homes who cannot afford to pay any charges.
For middle class people who have spent thier life in a better and comfortable style and wants same in old age. They or their children are prepared to contribute from their earnings or from their pension etc. but want a comfortable stay and moderate modern amenities at moderate charges.
Very high society people who want hi-fi way of living with AC rooms & clubs etc.
We started “ Gharkul” in the year May, 2001 in a small rented house at Tilakwadi, Belgaum. We made arrangement to accommodate 10 senior citizens there by providing a neat and comfortable Shelter by providing all sorts of necessary infrastructure such as cots, beds, linen, chaddars, Blankets and Mosquito Nets. Provided them with best quality food, morning & evening tea, breakfast, lunch & dinner etc. we keep them engaged with some Bhajans, Keertans, news papers, magezines etc. Religion, cast and creed has no scope in our Gharkul.
We run Gharkul on No profit basis, we at present charge Rs. 3000/- ( Rs. Three Thousand only) per person per month. We have sufficient number of staff whom we have to pay salary. However we the trustees and members work honourarily.
Three years after our stay in rent house, the owner asked us to Vacate the house. Then we shifted to yet another specious and large accommodation in at cantonment area in Belgaum on rental basis. We were paying heavy rent there. The owner there also started chasing us out after 6 years. So we purchased an Agricultural Land measuring one acre fourteen Gunthas (1Acre 14 Gunthas). After obtaining due Permission from D.C. for buying agricultural land 7 kms away from Belgaum in Subarbs known as Benakanhalli. We got the land converted in to Non Agriculture. After getting bldg. permission from the Benakanhalli Gram-Panchayat. We started Ist Phase of our construction i.e 25% of our total project. We are proud to say that with our meager resources and donations from ourselves and general public, we have completed 25% of Construction and we have shifted to the new premises on 19th Nov. 2011. We are proud to be in our own house.
At present there are 3 large dormitories, 4 twin bedded rooms, a large dining hall and a large kitchen. We can accommodate only 25 people in the present premises though there is a growing demand. Our Ist Phase has cost us about 70 lacs. Our total project cost is Rs. 2,64,16,000/-( estimation as of January, 2011. ) All our rooms are with attached toilets with all modern amenities. Since there is a growing demand from senior citizens, it has become necessary for us to go in to 2nd phase of 25% more atleast. We are approaching the general public, philanthropist for donation. So that we can accommodate 25 more senior citizens.

Appeal
We have taken all permissions/clearances required for construction of the building. Further it is essential to have staff quarters and kitchen and dining room in the first phase. We are having two types of rooms for the inmates, one to accommodate 2 people and the other to accommodate five people. All the rooms will be self contained rooms with modern amenities.
